What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical word for excessive sweating.
Your body will suddenly begin to sweat an abnormally large amount for no apparent cause. It is natural for you to experience feelings of self-consciousness about having this condition; nevertheless, you are not alone in feeling this way.

Two types of Hyperhidrosis

Primary type:

Caused by genetic condition and an unknown cause and sweating is more specifically seen over the face, armpits, palms or soles.

Secondary type:

Arises due to secondary to other disease (Thyroid disorder, Diabetes Mellitus, Cancer, etc.,) or due to medication or drug intake.

How will you know if you have Hyperhidrosis?

The emotional toll of hyperhidrosis is real and deserves attention. People with hyperhidrosis often avoid social situations because they are sometimes ashamed of the amount of sweating.

The following are some of the most common signs of sweating and might help you diagnose the problem:-
  • If you are embarrassed by your perspiration you shy away from handshakes and other forms of physical contact.

  • If you avoid activities like dancing and exercise because you’re afraid they’ll make your sweating worse

  • If you’re having trouble at work because of your sweating (for example, holding tools or using a computer keyboard)

  • If you’re having trouble with normal daily activities like driving, walking barefoot, sweaty socks etc…

  • If you’re spending a lot of time dealing with your sweating (for example, taking long showers and changing clothes frequently)

  • If you’re withdrawing socially and feeling bad about yourself.

Also, some of the common symptoms can help you determine whether you have Hyperhidrosis:
  1. Having your skin feel damp.
  2. Having your garments get wet.
  3. Fluid flowing in beads from your forehead and cheeks.

As hyperhidrosis worsens, these additional symptoms may appear:
  1. Skin irritation from perspiration causes itching and redness.
  2. Smelly sweat and skin bacteria
  3. Feet with peeling or cracked skin.

Changes in one's way of life

  1. Lifestyle adjustments can reduce primary hyperhidrosis sweating and boost self-esteem.
  2. Avoid alcohol and spicy meals that make you sweat.
  3. Avoid nylon and tight clothes.
  4. White or dark garments can hide perspiration.
  5. Armpit sweat guards keep garments dry and comfortable.
  6. Wear thick, natural-fiber-wicking socks or sports socks
  7. Avoid synthetic socks and rotate pairs.
  8. Use leather shoes and replace them often.
  9. More effective deodorants.

Temporary Treatments for Hyperhidrosis:

Antiperspirant with aluminum chloride

Prevents sweating by blocking the sweat ducts. You should put it on before bed and then wash it off in the morning. You can also try switching to a soap alternative or using emollients (moisturizers) regularly.

Anticholinergics

They are effective because they inhibit the neurotransmitter acetylcholine's ability to trigger perspiration. Some people find them useful, but they are not commonly used because most varieties are not approved to treat hyperhidrosis.

Iontophoresis, or the "Sweat-Free Machine

It is a device that passes ionized tap water through the skin using direct electricity which can disable your sweat glands temporarily
This might be a possibility if you suffer from excessive perspiration in either your hands or feet, or both. A medical gadget transmits low-voltage electricity through the water as you do this.
A large number of patients find help but the lengthy recovery period is a drawback for some patients.
